Embodiment and Racial Bias in "Brendan's Voyage"
Based on the medieval tale The Voyage of Saint Brendan, the video game "Brendan's Voyage" aims to teach aspect of the medieval French language in an immersive environment. This talk will journey into the medieval world of complex and often contradictory views on race, showing how works like The Voyage of St. Brendan both reflect and inform past and present understandings of race, religion, and otherness.
Lynn Ramey is Professor of French and Italian and Cinema and Media Arts at Vanderbilt University. As an undergraduate, she studied computer science and French literature and has retained an interest in ways that technology can enhance our understanding of the past. Her research interests are in travel, cultural conflict, and assimilation and her publications in the field include two books, five edited volumes, and numerous articles.
